‘Hungama 2’ producer Ratan Jain on its OTT release: How long can one wait? I don’t see the theatres opening before August at least- Exclusive! – Times of Hindustan

Since the past few hours, reports have been flying thick and fast that Ratan Jain‘s ‘Hungama 2’ will be released on OTT. This is the first official confirmation coming your way. ETimes spoke to the film’s producer Ratan Jain.

‘Hungama 2’, a sequel to the 2003 hit ‘Hungama’, stars Meezaan Jafri. Shilpa Shetty, Paresh Rawal, Johnny Lever. Shakti Kapoor and Rajpal Yadav in main roles. The film has been directed by Priyadarshan.

Excerpts from the conversation:

Is it official that ‘Hungama 2’ will be an OTT release?

Yes. How long could I have waited? The movie was ready about 6-8 months back. We would have released it this month in the theatres, if things had been better. But with the present scenario, I don’t think the cinema halls would open before July or August at least.

Have you got the money that you would have otherwise made in the theatres?

You never know how much I would have made in theatres. Sales at ticket windows are always dicey, I mean, they were dicey even before COVID struck. But one thing is for sure, I have not been shortchanged.

Are the actors of ‘Hungama 2’ on the same page as you?

Yes, they are all on the same page.

Do you think this model of movies premiering on OTT is here to stay?

I think so. Soon in future, several movies would be made for OTT only from the word ‘Go’.

Do you consume movies and web shows on OTT?

Yes, I have been consuming such stuff. It has excited me as a filmmaker to think of content to be made for OTT only.

I asked you that question precisely for that. You weren’t in the thick of things in between…

Yes, but now as I said, I might be churning out stories for OTT only.

And when theatres open?

Of course, my first bent would be towards theatres. But I can juggle both.

Any advantages of making a film for OTT?

Well, I don’t know about others but I think I don’t need a star when I make a film for a streaming platform. Secondly, I don’t need to insert songs for just the heck of it. Movies-in-theatres is a different ball game altogether.
